Weather today…The hundred+ degree streak has been broken! It has been a seasonable mid-nineties summer day.

Summer Happenings: End of summer for me is today :-(!

I’m reading:

I’m listening to: I don’t listen to audio books, usually. When I do, it’s always a book I have read before. I have to see the words myself to make complete sense of a text the first time. Books finished this week:

None–I failed the Summer Reading Challenge miserably. I did NOT finish any book in the last two weeks :-(. In fact, I have not picked up a book for several days :-O.

Abandoned book: None this week

Scripture lesson: Today’s guiding verse:

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Proverbs 31:30

Sunday Salon (11) 4th of July Week

Weather today…So, the heat is here and it looks like it will stay for awhile. 😦 103 Saturday, but a cool down projected for today (mid-90s) and tomorrow (mid-80s!)! Please, oh please, send me a thunderstorm. Update: Yep, got our thunderstorm last night! 🙂

Summer Happenings: Had to drive to Nebraska to bring MiniQ home on the 3rd. We enjoyed watching the fireworks outside on our porch on the 4th!

I am spending quite a bit of time working on lesson plans for fall. I am also working (part time) for K12 online schools.

I’m reading:

Library Visit:

This week, MiniQ & I went to the library to get some new books. I returned many and checked out four new ones. Why?!? I still have a huge TBR pile of my own. But it always feels wrong to walk into a bookstore or a library and walk out empty handed. AND, I am following King’s advice of “writers read a lot.” Here are this week’s picks:

Scripture lesson in church: Our current message series is focusing on Nehemiah and the idea of Reclamation, Restoration, and Renewal. Today’s guiding verse:

They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire. ”

When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. (Nehemiah 1: 3-4)

I’m praying for: Guidance and strength to find God’s path for me. I give myself over to him for his guidance. I am not in control.

From the kitchen: Steaks, baked potatoes, root beer floats, and watermelon.

Fun event of the week: Fireworks!

A favorite quote this week: This is what I posted on Facebook for the 4th of July. Remember!

Sunday Salon (10)

Weather today…We, here in Kansas, have had a pleasant spring and summer so far. Last year at this time we had already had numerous 95+ days. This year not so much, but this weekend, which ushers in the beginning of true summer brought the heat!

Summer Happenings: One wee k of summer school remains!

I’m reading:

  • The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck (one of my favorite classics! Just read the chapter on the turtle.)
  • Kate Remembered by A. Scott Berg
  • The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness #1 of The Chaos Walking Series. I honestly don’t know much about this series and don’t remember who recommended it to me. I have all three books on my iPad and they will help me with the Summer Reading Challenge.
  • How to Write a Sentence by Stanley Fish. I cannot wait to finish this one. It is proving to be a quick read, even though I am taking notes from almost every page. I wish I had read this one a long time ago! And, I will buy my own copy!

I’m listening to:  I don’t listen to audio books, usually. When I do, it’s always a book I have read before. I have to see the words myself to make complete sense of a text the first time. Scripture lesson in church:

The Parable of the Lost Son: Luke 15: 11-32     The pastor pointed out the lost son wandered, wondered, wasted, and finally wanted and when he returned home to confess his sins to his father, his father welcomed him with open arms. As does God, to all who believe in him.

Weather today…After spending Friday and Saturday in less than warm South Dakota, I have returned to a sunny, if somewhat humid, Kansas spring.

Summer Happenings: School’s out…let the fun begin! I began summer vacation by traveling to South Dakota to leave MiniQ with the grandparents. I am flying solo this summer, so my reading and blogging time have increased!

I’m reading:

  • Lawyers in Hell edited by Janet Morris. This one is slow going. I am currently on the story with Che Guevarra and Kurt Kobain. Not sure why this one is going sooooo slow. It is a good read.

Abandoned book: I have not let any books go this week 🙂

Scripture lesson in church: Because I was traveling, I missed church this morning, but spent some time reading in the book of Isaiah and keep this one close:

Isaiah 41:10  “fear not, for I am with you;  be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you,  I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

I’m praying for: All those who are currently serving, have served, sacrificed themselves for us.

Around the house: Time to really clean and organize the office.

From the kitchen: Brats, salads, the standard Memorial Weekend fare.

Fun event of the week: Trip home to SD.

Sunday Salon (7) Graduation Edition!

Weather today…The heat is slowly creeping back up. I dislike checking the weather forecasts and see the days inching farther and farther into the higher digits…lol…but I am grateful for the beautiful weather we have had this spring.

In my classes this week: It was the last full week before finals week. Lots of review, talk of books, and suggestions of summer reads from students.

Scripture lesson in church: er…ummm…I missed church this morning…but here is a scripture for all those grads out there:

“For I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord,
“plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.”
Jeremiah 29:11

I’m praying for: All the graduates out there this month-to trust in God and find their future along his path.

Sunday Salon (6) Happy Mother’s Day Edition

Weather today…The heat abated for a few weeks and it has been oh, so nice! It has stayed crisp with spring’s coolness blanketing the days.

In my classes this week: In my 1920s & 30s class we have discussed infographics and what kinds of information can be used to make them. We may/may not produce our own this year. There are so few days left.

In my War Lit class we finished reading Farewell to Manzanar and have moved on to reading the first chapter of The Things They Carried. The students seem to enjoy it. The realness of the happenings and the sadness with which the author speaks make it a moving piece of reading.

I’m reading:

  • Lawyers in Hell edited by Janet Morris. This one is slow going.
  • Kate Remembered by A. Scott Berg

I’m listening to:  I don’t listen to audio books, usually. When I do, it’s always a book I have read before. I have to see the words myself to make complete sense of a text the first time. So, instead of audiobooks, I will share my iPod shuffled playlist for the week 🙂 !

Paper Airplane Alison Krauss

Human Touch & Atlantic City Bruce Springsteen

Get Off This Cracker

I Dream of You Perry Como

Keepin’ It Real Shaggy

Books finished this week: I finished Nevermore by William Hjortsberg. I will be posting a review soon. It was a fair read. I anticipated liking it more than I actually did and I’m not sure why. Houdini, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Edgar Allen Poe could make for great storytelling. It just didn’t pull it off for me.

I also finished Farewell to Manzanar with my students this week. Will also be posting a review of this soon.

Abandoned book: I have not let any books go this week 🙂

Scripture lesson in church: Isaiah 8:13-14 “The LORD Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy, he is the one you are to fear, he is the one you are to dread, and he will be a sanctuary; but for both houses of Israel he will be a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall. And for the people of Jerusalem he will be a trap and a snare.” (NIV) This week’s lesson is about fearing God, because he sent his son for our salvation, without which we will stumble and fall.

I’m praying for: Many cyber friends who have enormous loads to carry and ask for peace.

Around the house: Prepping for the inevitable summer cleaning. Since school will be out, it will time to get the house back in shape.

From the kitchen: Nothing! MiniQ took me out to the Mexican restaurant for Mother’s Day lunch.

Fun event of the week: Mother’s Day!

Sunday Salon (5)

Weather today…Woke to the sound of raindrops on the roof. There is no better sensation than lying in bed, pondering the heavens, and hearing the rain fall down. It was a crisp, cool day after the rain. Ah, Spring!

In my classes this week: In my 1920s & 30s class we finished Of Mice and Men. Wow! The kids, when they heard the ending and the choice George had to make…they were floored. Great discussion ensued and I will share bits of it when I write my review.

In my War Lit class we are still reading Farewell to Manzanar. The kids are still intrigued and discussing!

In both classes the plans and project for National Poetry Month are close to ending! I received a great note from a student about how she was wary of the poetry project, in fact that she HATED poetry, until I introduced it to her and she found a new outlet for her thoughts and feelings. Yay!

I’m reading: Not as much as usual this week. LOL

  • Lawyers in Hell edited by Janet Morris. This one is slow going.
  • Nevermore by William Hjortsberg

I’m listening to:  I don’t listen to audio books, usually. When I do, it’s always a book I have read before. I have to see the words myself to make complete sense of a text the first time. So, instead of audiobooks, I will share my iPod playlist for the week 🙂 !

This week  spent a large amount of time watching videos of slam poets, like Sarah Kay, Taylor Mali, and more in preparation for the final parts of my poetry unit.

Book finished this week: I finished Mockingjay & Ruby Holler & Of Mice and Men this week. They are very good and I will be uploading my reviews very soon.

Abandoned book: I have not let any books go this week 🙂

Scripture lesson in church: Galatians 5:14 “For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'” This week’s study is the fight we have while we walk this Earth between the Flesh and the Spirit.

I’m praying for: Those around me who still struggle to find Christ in their life.

Around the house: Cleaned kitchen-top to bottom. Picked up some picture frames for my new “art work.” Will post soon!

From the kitchen: Spaghetti. MiniQ is addicted to it.

Fun event of the week: Sitting by the first discussing Bruce Springsteen with someone who deserves the respect and admiration those around him show him.
